So this is going to be a tutorial on how to make a pair of these contoured Kandi goggles. Their will be lots of photos anyone who has questions is welcome to ask. Thanks and hope this adds some verity to the rave world and all those flat cuff style monster goggles out there. Even though I do love them still.
For everyone unfamiliar with the term Kandi, Items made using those little plastic pony beds usually used in kids crafts but it can include way more then just those.
There is what these bad boys look like with just a dollar store set of sunglasses lenses laced into them, they can be totally functional or just look nice on your head its all up to the artist. Shall we get started then?
Step 1: So your going to grab about two arm lengths of clear plastic stretch lace or elastic cord if you prefer. I recommend something a little sturdier then just the stretch string for the frame base. Put 24 beads on the length.
Now Your going to pull the tail end of your string through the front bead of your 24 count and make a ring.
Step 2: Adding your second row. Add one bead skip a bead.
Now string through the next bead and repeat.
The end of the row should look like this:
To end this row you will pull through the last single center bead like this:
You want both your tail and lead strings to come through this center bead:
Pull both tail and lead up through the top cross beads of the second row:
Step 3: Add another row as seen in the last step. When you reach the end of the row pull your tail string through the last bead.
Now both tail and lead string come through the same bead again.
lace through the lower beads on each side to secure this bead in place.
Bring the lead thread through the next upper bead and you are ready to begin the next row.
Step 4: Okay we will now begin to create our contour. Add beads just as if you were beginning a new row, Add one bead, lace through the next bead below it, add another bead, repeat this step for thirteen beads. From the top you first contour row should look something like this:
When you lace under the 14th bead come back over the top and pull the lace through the 13th bead again.
Step 5: Continue contour row, reducing count by 1 bead, from here the beads should begin to stack up like a pyramid.
Again you will pull the string up over the last bead and through the bead you just added on the last row.
Step 5: Add your row decreasing as in the previous step.
Pull tight lace up and over your bead again looping through the bead that was just added.
Step 6: Repeat!
Step 7: Last round? Pictures speak so much better here:
Step 8: Oh hay remember that lose tail back at the bottom?
Don't worry if your tail isn't right there next to your contour just wave it through till it is, now your going to lave it up the decline.
From there thread through the bottom bead under the top.
Through the other side bead.
Tie it up using a square knot, That is right string over left string and under, then now left string over right and under, pull tight!
Tuck your tail under before trimming.
Repeat everything to make another goggle cuff, you will need two.
Step 9: Add Head band. You can use stretchy elastic cord here if you like, I just use the same lace I used on the goggles, as I already had enough left over after making each lens base. I string the beads through then come back through them a second time for strength. I can not tell you how many beads to use here everyone has a different shape to their head, you will need to find out what works for you. If you are not sure you may wish to make the bridge or nose of your goggles first and then measure the distance for your head band.
Tie off when you reach your starting point. I usually tuck my thread through the lower bead when I'm done but you may choose to cover your knots all together.
Accessorize with button if desired:
I stuck mine through the top single bead.
This is what you should have now, we are almost done but not quite.
Step 10: To finish up you only need a little piece of string and either two regular pony beads in your theme color or a star shaped accessory pony bead.
Count out five beads from your first row of contour, their should be five beads one way, five beads the other and one bead dead center, place your string through this bead. It should not be a raised bead, if you use one of the raised beads as the nose of your goggles they will not sit flush to your face, and the bridge you re crating will dig into your nose.
Add your two beads or if you prefer you my use a star accent or even a heart accent pony bead. The heart may dig into your skin some just be aware. Stars seem to work fine for me, as does the two bead method, more then two beads will make the goggles very wide apart but if your eyes are further apart then try it, if you ever intend to use them you should really measure this distance first but For most my friends and I two beads is really more then enough space.
Connect on the same bead on your opposite goggle cuff.
Tie your square knot, pull the ends tight and through the two beads so the knot rests under the beads.
Trim and wear!
Action shot!
Hope all this helped. Adding lenses may or may not ever come to this tutorial...but its a good start.
